Common materials and material properties of bearing shells

2025-04-02

The bearing shell is the contact area between the sliding bearing and the journal, and its common materials and material properties directly affect the performance of the bearing shell. Based on our understanding of the bearing shell, we share information about common materials and material properties of the bearing shell.

Common materials for bearing shells include:

1. Metal materials

——Bearing alloys (Babbitt alloy, white alloy) are alloys composed of tin, lead, antimony, copper, etc;

——Copper alloys are divided into two types: bronze and brass;

——Cast iron includes ordinary gray cast iron, ductile iron, etc.

2. Powder metallurgy materials

——A porous bearing material made by pressing and sintering powders of copper, iron, graphite, and other materials.

3. Non metallic materials

——There are plastic, hardwood, rubber, etc., among which plastic is the most commonly used.

Material properties of bearing shells:

1. Friction reducing properties: The material pair has a relatively low coefficient of friction.

2. Wear resistance: The wear resistance of a material, usually expressed in terms of wear rate.

3. Anti bite adhesion (bonding): The heat resistance and anti adhesion properties of materials.

4. Friction compliance: The ability of materials to compensate for initial poor fit of bearing sliding surfaces through surface elastic-plastic deformation.

5. Embeddability: The material accommodates hard particles embedded, thereby reducing the performance of scratching or abrasive wear on the sliding surface of the bearing.

6. Run in property: The ability (or property) of the bearing shell and journal surface to form a mutually matching surface shape and roughness after short-term light load operation.

7. In addition, it should have sufficient strength and corrosion resistance, good thermal conductivity, processability, and economy.
